Coffee brewing, buying, and home roasting our most wonderful beverage
My affair with coffee started in university - Amaretto Almond before first class. Started buying bulk beans from supermarkets and brewing at home. I enjoyed the wine-like experience of comparing different types. Then Starbucks, of all places, got me off flavoured beans and on the road to single origins. The first S'bucks I visited was in Chicago's Loop. I was vacationing from the Canadian Arctic, where I was living and working, and started each morning with an exotic sounding cup from Starbucks…

A new cafe (the 1st La Cimbali and Mazer machines in my city of 18,000) opened down the street. I went there on opening day to celebrate with the proprietor and enjoy a great coffee. Results? Tremendous ambiance and furniture/space, but the coffee was off. I think either the boiler temp ran too high (they're only pulling 5 or 6 shots an hour) or the staff hadn't gotten the hang of milk frothing (I ordered a latte) and cooked the milk. When asked what I thought, I was honest, thinking they'd appr…

I found this pretty interesting. The majority shareholder in Caribou coffee makes investments in a manner consistent with the body of Islamic principles known as Shari'ah and consequently I am in the question as to whether or not Caribou operates in a manner with Shari'ah principles. Furthermore, Caribou Coffee encountered a lot of negative publicity back in 2002. In an article that was posted on politicalusa.com, it was asserted that Caribou Coffee was tied to the Muslim brotherhood, the Muslim…

Aloha everyone,
Happy New Year to one and all. Hawaii is the last state in the US to move into 2008 so I thought I would post this now. It appears that we may have a rainy day and it will perhaps limit the fireworks. In Hawaii individual fireworks displays are legal, with a $25 permit.
We at Princess Radha Farm hope that you all have a Happy New Year and are prosperous at whatever your interests may be.
Mahalo,

One of goals before the end of the year was to clear my hard drive video camera to make room for some more clips in 2008. I came across some clips that were taken in Mexico and Boston this year. Could not resist in putting these together for the two videos I just posted.
In any event Happy New Year! With everyone's help next year I can see 25,000 new sign ups to participant in About Coffee. Just keep on inviting your family, friends, business associates, competitors, contacts in your ad…

We just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from our coffee farm in Captain Cook, south Kona, Hawaii.
Last week we drove up to the top of the volcano, Mauna Loa, 14,000 feet high and snow covered. That was our holiday treat! Oh then yesterday we went to the beach and snorkeled in 80 degree water.

Twas the night before Christmas and all round my hips
were Fannie May candies that sneaked past my lips.
Fudge brownies were stored in the freezer with care
in hopes that my thighs would forget they were there.
While Mama in her girdle and I in chin straps
had just settled down to sugar-borne naps.
When out in the pantry there arose such a clatter
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the kitchen I flew like a flash
tore…

Central Pennsylvania is struggling to dig out of an ice storm today. Power lines are down and lots of trees where taken out. Numerous areas are without power. I will speculate that Camp Hill's Starbucks is relying on backup emergency generators in the event power was cut to their facility. Hopefully they will have some hot coffee when I stop by later.

What would be a recession indicator in the business for selling coffee? You can always checkout the traffic and additional sales a sale generates. It would have to of course be a price reduction deal. If the reduced sale prices fail to generate traffic and those extra transactions, you are in a recession otherwise no recession.
I noticed this week at a local Starbucks that they are having a coffee sale. I believe it might be 20% off the listed prices on their bagged coffee. This struck…

I want to throw out the possibility of taking this network to a level of thousands of member/participants with the help of all of you. If you have someone in mind that buys, brews, roasts, manages, etc. this great drink (coffee) invite them to join About Coffee.
And I want to mention that this network is an international community in regard to our most wonderful beverage. I suggest one could even characterize coffee as a language we all can understand.
So if you know of someone,…

Hi Song,
I never thought i would blog..and maybe i won't..but i have to try to decide...
Here i can blog knowing that only my friends will be bothered (i designated this "Friends Only" and you are my "only Friend")
It is a way to keep track of things..without putting on airs that i have what to offer to humanity. I love coffee and its preparation..but i am no expert.
I think i have developed "over interest" in Coffee in order to distract my attention from…

I figured the time has come to try this media....and since someone from SweetMaria's Homeroaster List was interested in seeing pics of my Most UnSophisticated IRoast Mod..I decided to post them here and invite the bloke over for a look.
My Iroast was roasting at six minutes no matter what i did to try to program lower temps. I new that airflow was a key factor here..and the chaff collector was a key element.
If I was going increase airflow and allow the chaff mo…

I just received my new Aeropress and I do have to admit I kind of like it. The absolute best part is the clean up. I'm still working on this whole "dilute and consume" concept. I'm a little mistrustful of diluting it, and I can't believe how fast it is!

Aloha,
As I mentioned above my wife and I live in Captain Cook, South Kona District, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We own and operate a 7 acre Kona coffee farm that has been a coffee farm for 150 years. We have coffee trees that are 100 plus years old.
We are coming to the end of the 2007 harvest. Most likely our final round of picking will be in 7-10 days as the last of 2-3000 pound of cherry ripens. The total harvest this year will be around 30,000 pounds of cherry.

We are traveling to Costa Rica in December. We will enjoy the great coffee, awesome mountains, Pacific beaches, and kind hospitality of the Ticos.
We usually pack fairly light when we travel, but this trip we will carry several large suitcases. The extra bags will be packed with donated items for needy school children in Costa Rica. We need your help to fill these extra bags.
We will be in the Turrialba Coffee region and will donate items to the…
